Design Patterns Library
Reusable solutions for health application design
This library captures reusable design patterns specific to healthcare applications. These patterns are informed by Ziro’s experience building health products and by established research in health UX, accessibility, and behavioral design.
Patient-Centered Design
Putting patients at the heart of your product through empathy and health literacy
Accessibility as Baseline
Designing for all abilities — vision, hearing, motor, and cognitive
Trust & Transparency
Building trust through transparent data practices and AI explainability
Behavioral Design
Designing for sustained health behavior change
Data Visualization for Health
Making health data meaningful and actionable for patients and clinicians
How to Use These Patterns
Each pattern includes:
- When to use it — The design challenge it addresses
- Core principles — The foundational ideas
- Implementation patterns — Concrete design solutions
- Examples — Real-world applications
- Related patterns — Connections to other design and technical patterns
A Note on Health Patterns
Health design patterns differ from general UX patterns because they must account for:
- Clinical safety — Design errors can have real consequences
- Regulatory requirements — HIPAA, GDPR, MDR create design constraints
- Health literacy — Users have widely varying ability to understand health information
- Emotional state — Users may be anxious, in pain, or caring for a loved one
- Multi-stakeholder — Designs must work for patients, clinicians, and administrators
